Structures Unit

We are nearing the end of our structures unit in science class. The students have been doing a lot of building in class with different materials. In conjunction with their science unit, they are working on an integrated project in writing class as well. They have been gathering facts about a structure of their personal choice. They have used books, videos, websites as well as a web site through the AEA called Learn360. We have also been working on how to take all of that information and sort it into different categories. Those categories/topics will become their main ideas for the paragraphs in the writing part of this project. In addition to the writing project, they have created a list of possible ways they could share their knowledge with their classmates and others at school. Some of them have chosen to build a replica of their structure, a scaled drawing, a detailed drawing, etc. My hopes is that they will use their talents and creativity in other ways instead of printing pictures from the internet and gluing them onto a cardboard tri-fold board.
The writing portion of this project is being done during language arts time in class. However, the other portion of the project (drawing, building, etc) will need to be primarily worked on at home.
These projects will be due on MONDAY, FEBRUARY 28.

Thanks!

Roller Skating Unit

A permission form for the roller skating unit in PE went out over the Iowa's RD3 Public Announcement email (formerly the PLS Public). Please print a copy of the permission form and return to school. This unit has been funded this year through the generosity of the NU Booster Club, PTP, and the administration. All permission forms have to be returned before your child will be allowed to participate.
Thanks!

Science Materials Needed

As part of our structure unit in science, the students are building structures using different materials. So far they have used straws, paperclips, index cards and tape. However, we are in need of newspapers and toilet paper tubes. If any of you have some that you could recycle through our science unit, please send it with your child either tomorrow (Thursday) or early next week.

We are also going to need a lot of miniature marshmallows and toothpicks to construct our culminating structure.

Thanks!

Deep in the Winter Blahs!

In the past couple of weeks we have experienced several days at school that have not reflected our normal routines. Late starts, no school, indoor recess and the influence of many outside of school activities have contributed to inconsistencies in student behaviors. We all need a refocus of attention to what is important; namely, learning. We are asking that you remind your child about this important aspect of school and ask them to refocus their efforts to do their best all of the time. This will make Price Laboratory School the best it can be. With added effort we all can beat the winter blahs.

Short Week - No Friday Folders

Short week equals no Friday folders. Please send back the Friday folder from last week if your child did not return it.

Thanks,

Weekend Math

The students should have both of their math books with them as well as a review sheet they created. The books will be valuable to the students as they study for the 26 question assessment on Monday.

Any review you would like to do with your child over these concepts would be helpful. The concepts the students have studied are:
Equivalent Fractions
Equivalent Percents
Mixed Numbers
Adding fractions
Comparing and Ordering fractions

These topics should be covered on the review and certainly can be found in the Student Reference Book index. I am looking forward to seeing each student's progress over this math unit.
